Heroes

I was four years old when my dad came home with a tall thin cardboard package. As a more-than-usually curious little girl it intrigued me, so I begged him to reveal its contents. My dad eventually let me help him unpack the package – it was a red-and-yellow kid’s tent with a huge Spider-Man image leaping towards me, legs pointed forward, one hand gripping his web-rope, the other thrust forward shooting web at an unsuspecting criminal! WOW!

I can’t remember when I started to like Spider-Man or why. What I do remember is that tent, my outfit, the cartoons and the theme song. I loved Spider-Man. I still love Spider-Man. Later on, I loved X-Men and the Fantastic Four, and even though I never really fell for DC characters the same way, I had a huge crush on Superman (or rather Christopher Reeve) and loved the films.

Since the explosion of Marvel hero films onto our cinema screens, it seems there is always something comic-related to be excited about, and this trend shows no signs of stopping. For me, working on IMPACT Books is just like opening that box all those years ago – WOW! I love the art, I love the passion, I love working with people who get as excited about it all as I do!

We have so many great artists working on IMPACT Books; it’s a privilege to have insight into a world that has thrilled me for so many years. I am ecstatic about the fact that Bryan Hitch is doing a book with us next year – he is a hero himself, working from within the hallowed halls of the Marvel universe. And having the chance to talk to him and to see his art first hand is like my birthday every day!

It’s not just comic heroes that capture my heart – fantasy and sci-fi are everywhere you look in print and in film. Harry Potter, Narnia, Spiderwick, Smallville and Heroes – it all fills me with same kind of joy and fascination that Spider-Man first did when I was little. And with the promise of Thor and The Hobbit to look forward too, I for one hope that fantasy, sci-fi and my beloved comic heroes are well and truly here to stay.
