Twilight–Love It or Leave It?

Twilight is here and big and everyone has something to say about it whether they’ve seen it / read it, or not. Just out in the US, Twilight the movie has been dubbed a “cultural phenomenon,” making a big IMPACT on audiences of all ages.

My 14 year-old niece loves a good romance (usually more in the words of Jane Austen), and loved the Twilight books. The movie for her…”was OK.” My 32-year-old friend here at North Light Books on the other hand had a lot to say…”I LOVED IT!”

How do you weigh in on this new fantasy phenom? Let us know!

An Interview With a Twilight Junky, aka, my friend here at North Light Books:

Did you read the Twilight books? Yep! I’m not one to read and actually a co-worker (Laura) lent Twilight to me. I started reading it on a Sunday morning and by that evening, I was out buying New Moon. Since I work full-time, I was not able to finish the others until later that week and weekend, but within 10 days, I had read all four in the series. I’ve since gone back and re-read them again. I’m 32 and have turned most of my 30-something friends on to the series. (My husband still refuses to see the movie or read the books, though.) Even my 8-year-old has picked it up.

Are you looking forward to the next in the series? Yes! Supposedly New Moon begins filming early next year for a release late next year. I just hope that all of the cast signs on for Breaking Dawn. I know that a lot of fans did not care for the fourth book, but I enjoyed it and would love to see it make the screen.

Did you like Twilight the movie? Why? I LOVED the movie and have seen it twice. I thought they did the best they could with sticking to the story line. There are parts where it can be a bit “teen-cheesy,” but all-in-all, I thought it was well done. It was also done tastefully so that my daughter could go with me to watch it.

What specifically did you like/dislike about the movie? Why?
1) Rob Pattinson plays the perfect Edward Cullen
2) I really like the dynamic with the rest of the Cullen family and think they did an excellent job with casting.
3) The soundtrack is absolutely fabulous!
4) Billy Burke is exactly how I pictured Charlie in my head.
5) The baseball scene is light, fun and yet entertaining.
6) Did I mention Rob Pattinson? I want to make sure that we cover the stunning Rob Pattinson.

Did the author/actors/director do a good job? Why or why not?
I think Catherine Hardwicke did an excellent job directing the film–she saw it for what it was and she worked with a very limited budget.
Rob Pattinson’s portrayal of Edward Cullen is spot on–it would be difficult for any actor to portray Cullen as he is often pictured as the “perfect man,” even though he’s a vampire. Rob was amazing. Simply amazing. (Ok–so swooning is involved, too)
As for Stephenie Meyer, she wrote a story that spans quite an age range and I commend her for being able to do such.

Did you like the movie as well as the book? Why or why not? I like both for different reasons but will always be more into the book. When you are reading the book, you see more into the characters from Bella’s perspective and your imagination is able to fill in the blanks. With the movie, it’s the characters coming to life, so you do not have to think as hard. You can just sit back and enjoy the storyline. From a pure eye candy standpoint, the movie is ideal. From a true storyline perspective, the book is tops.

How could the movie be improved? Why would particular changes help? I think I would have played up Alice’s character more in the movie. She becomes more integral as things progress in Bella and Edward’s relationship and I think that more groundwork could have been laid, but truthfully–there is not much I would have changed. Maybe had Rob run around shirtless a bit. Ha!
