Lately, everybody’s talking about GRAFF: The Art & Technique of Graffiti, so I figured it was time to post the Q+A we did with Scape Martinez, the author of this completely cool, how to draw and paint graffiti guide.

He owns and operates two clothing lines, Liquidscape (www.liquidscape.com).He consistently teaches workshops and classes throughout the San Jose area, is featured in exhibitions, and works as an arts advocate for kids.

When did you know you wanted to be an artist? When I discovered I already was one.
Give us a taste of your latest project? I finished a public art project for the city of San Jose. Two murals, one digital, the other hand-rendered. Both are 3 dimensional and abstract. Fun stuff!
Talk about a time you felt starstruck in your line of work. Never felt “starstruck.” Sorry.
What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve received? “Never give up” or “Don’t listen to the haters” or “Don’t try to be an artist unless you can work and live in isolation, without any thanks…” bleak, but needed until you get to the much lauded place.
