Comic books have gorgeous art that the artists carefully plan and illustrate. The flashy panels, intricate scenes and dynamic characters have inspired fan art, cosplay and of course comic tattoo art! Some comic tattoo art pieces are small homages to characters and others can take up a whole back or sleeve.
Often the tattoo artists who ink the comic book pieces are fans of comic books themselves. They understand the characters and story behind the ink. If you want a comic tattoo of your own, these artists would be a good place to start. Make sure to follow their Instagram accounts! With no further ado, check out these ten elaborate tattoos.
The Dark Knight
Batman is an iconic comic book character. Some people prefer Christian Bale’s Batman, some prefer the Tim Burton movie version. Both of these comic tattoos are impressive though!
Carlox Angarita grew up loving comic books. He drew caricatures of his friends and teachers to pass the time. Now he’s a successful tattoo artist working out of Bogota.
Carlos Rojas works at the Black Anchor Collective in Hesperia, California. This Batman sleeve shows the main characters from the Tim Burton film. Carlos’ realism skills showcase Michael Keaton as Batman, Jack Nicholson as the Joker, Danny DeVito as the Penguin and Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman.
This gorgeous black and white piece by Christian Lucca blends Heath Ledger’s Joker with Gotham City. Lucca likes to add surreal elements to his art. The Joker blending into the city is definitely surreal. The Joker is as much a part of Gotham City as Batman is.
Comic Character Mashups
These next two amazing mashups have characters from Marvel, DC, Star Wars and more. Both were inked by Derek Turcotte. The colors and realism in these tattoos is so impressive!
This Marvel tattoo by Daniele Maiorano, an Italian tattoo artist, blocks multiple key Marvel characters into the letters of the Marvel logo. It’s a clever design and so photorealistic!
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are cool enough that they’re worthy of a full back piece. This piece, inked by Jay Salerno, shows off the four turtles as well as Shredder and Splinter.

Ben Kelly is the owner of Red Ocean Tattoo in Savannah, Georgia. Kelly’s X-Men half sleeve features the classic costumes of the team. The tattoo shows off main characters of the team like Wolverine, Rogue and Gambit. Cyclops dramatically shoots a laser beam from his eyes and Jean Grey has a phoenix behind her, hinting at her darker powers and storyline.
Who Watches the Watchmen?
Both of these gorgeous Watchmen tattoos are by Russian tattoo artist Anjelika Kartasheva. Her Instagram is filled with gorgeous, realistic tattoo work, and she’s won multiple awards. A plane ticket to Russia would be worth it for one of these pieces!
