Dark Shadows is Coming!

Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Michelle Pfeiffer, among others, have joined Tim Burton in the remake of popular soap opera of Dark Shadows. Find out the full cast, the plot and see some photos at IMDB. One thing seems reasonably sure: this is one vampire that won’t sparkle.

Of course, here’s a look at the original black and white opening credits. What do you think? Can Tim Burton pull it off?

The Elephant in the Room

Artist Brittney Lee is a woman after my own heart: Her blogspot profile reads “I love drawing and chocolate.” Well, I can add that I love the art of Brittney Lee to my sentence, and I have no doubt that you’ll be blown away, too. Check it out.

Her works remind me of chocolate, in fact. She uses color in such a rich, vibrant way, and the work is sweet, but not artificially so.

Harry Potter This Friday!

After the ten year ride, only a few more days before the Harry Potter series ends in an all-out epic war in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. This is the first and only of the series to be released in 3D. Like me, a few people are excited about this considering 2,000 showings across the U.S. are already sold out! The world premiere was Thursday in London and the ending chapter is getting rave reviews including “Potter has certainly saved the best for last” and “for the millions of fans who’ve grown up with Potter, it’s good enough to make saying goodbye a tougher proposition.”

Although Rowling doesn’t plan on writing more for Harry anytime soon, there is still Pottermore, the e-book series.

Thor opens in theaters today

The new Marvel movie Thor opens in theaters everywhere today. It’s directed by Kenneth Branaugh, stars Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, and tells the story of a Norse god on modern-day Earth. What’s not to love? Seriously, it’s certified fresh at 81% on Rotten Tomatoes, and I’m certainly looking forward to seeing it tonight. Check out the official trailer here:

Close Encounters

I had plans for today, Readers. It involved long, intelligent thoughts about Akira and George Takei. But that went out the window thanks to the epic storm last night.

One, the storms that have hit the Ohio valley in the past two nights have rendered my brain not very thinky at all, especially when we have what seems to me to be a rather new, particularly interesting alarm in the nearby area. The thing about these alarms is that they aren’t actually unpleasant to the ears, which is a nice change– your tornado warnings come with a bit of a pleasant chime, rather than a wailing, screeching thing– but also have this haunting, ethereal sound to them that made me think that it wasn’t so much a tornado as an alien invasion. It did not, however, sound like a Close Encounter of a Third Kind, and Cincinnati had no spaceships hovering above it this morning, just rain clouds, so I guess my epic alien adventure will have to wait.

Of course, for a less alarming (ugh, terrible pun there, but resistance was futile!) alien encounter, why not draw what would make that noise? What kinds of Extreme Worlds would those aliens come from?

In the meantime, live long and prosper.

P.S. This is what happens when I have lack of sleep: too many sci-fi references to television and movies to count.
