Banned Ad Containing Zombies

I loved my uni days at Queen Mary, University of London, but this makes me wish, just a little, that I’d gone to the University of Lincoln.

“Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so.”
It’s been ten years since we lost the late, great Douglas Adams, but I think I’ll always remember the helpful advice contained in Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, written on the front of the book of said name:
Of course, that one usually comes to mind just as I’m starting to panic, so while it might be the quote I use most often, it’s not my favorite.
My favorite Douglas Adams quote is:
“In order to fly, all one must do is simply miss the ground.”
Except every once in a while, when the occasion calls for this little gem:
So long and thanks for all the fish.”
Random fun fact: No less than three Impact editors share a birthday with Douglas Adams. This falls right smack dab in the middle of Pisces, which is the symbol of 2 fish swimming.
And as a reminder, Towel Day is in 2 weeks on May 25th. To have your towel is to be in control of your own destiny, so don’t leave it behind.

Happy Star Wars Day

Today is May 4th, which of course, is Star Wars Day.

May the 4th be with you!

Of course, if you write your dates European style, with the day than the month, its 4th of May. I suspect Yoda would approve of this.

And tomorrow is Cinco de Mayo, so excuses options for decorating and dressing up abound, or at the very least, a reason to nosh on some delicious Mexican food.

Close Encounters

I had plans for today, Readers. It involved long, intelligent thoughts about Akira and George Takei. But that went out the window thanks to the epic storm last night.

One, the storms that have hit the Ohio valley in the past two nights have rendered my brain not very thinky at all, especially when we have what seems to me to be a rather new, particularly interesting alarm in the nearby area. The thing about these alarms is that they aren’t actually unpleasant to the ears, which is a nice change– your tornado warnings come with a bit of a pleasant chime, rather than a wailing, screeching thing– but also have this haunting, ethereal sound to them that made me think that it wasn’t so much a tornado as an alien invasion. It did not, however, sound like a Close Encounter of a Third Kind, and Cincinnati had no spaceships hovering above it this morning, just rain clouds, so I guess my epic alien adventure will have to wait.

Of course, for a less alarming (ugh, terrible pun there, but resistance was futile!) alien encounter, why not draw what would make that noise? What kinds of Extreme Worlds would those aliens come from?

In the meantime, live long and prosper.

P.S. This is what happens when I have lack of sleep: too many sci-fi references to television and movies to count.

A Stitch in Time

I read about these adorable cross-stitch samplers on IO9 the other day and I can’t stop thinking about how cute they’d look hanging in my hallway. And with a variety of superheroes and sci-fi, there’s something for everyone in there, ranging from Harry Potter to the Doctors–all 11 of them, which inspired the title of this post–to Firefly/Serenity and Scooby Doo. And since most of them are no more than $5 a pop, the price is most definitely right. I’m particularly fond of the Ghostbusters one. Bill Murray always has me in stitches when I watch; now it can be the other way around.

15 Worst Taglines in Horror Film History

“Appearing on posters or in film trailers, movie taglines are designed to give film fans that one catchphrase that producer’s hope will stick in their memories. The best ones can go down in pop culture history and the worst ones can make a bad picture even more laughable. In honor of Halloween, we have put together our list of the 15 best and worst taglines in horror film history. We’ve culled 80 years of history to come up with our list. Yesterday, we showed you the cream of the crop. Today, we’ll give you the bottom of the barrel. Be sure to leave a comment on some of your best and worst picks as well.”

For example, no. 12 is “Rest in Beast” from 1996′s Werewolf. Read the rest of the top 15 at mania.com

Michel Gondry Toilet Paper?

If you love Michel Gondry, you’ll definitely want to … umm … buy some Michel Gondry toilet paper? Yes, that’s right, you can get plush, 2-ply toilet paper printed with the notes, sketches and random thoughts of the writer and director of The Science of Sleep and Be Kind Rewind. Unfortunately, this item is currently out of stock, so you might have to wait for your roll.

In the meantime, find an artistic outlet for your own ideas and thoughts. Check out Graff by Scape Martinez for ways to get your message on the wall.

Buffy and Twilight’s Edward Meet?

I usually like vampire-themed movies and TV shows (love Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel), but I have yet to jump on the Twilight bandwagon (too much teenage angst?). However, I have wondered, what if Buffy and Edward existed in the same world? Turns out I’m not the first to consider what might happen if the snarky slayer and the brooding vampire met up. This remix is, well, pretty awesome.
