    Michel Gondry Toilet Paper?

If you love Michel Gondry, you’ll definitely want to … umm … buy some Michel Gondry toilet paper? Yes, that’s right, you can get plush, 2-ply toilet paper printed with the notes, sketches and random thoughts of the writer and director of The Science of Sleep and Be Kind Rewind. Unfortunately, this item is currently out of stock, so you might have to wait for your roll.

In the meantime, find an artistic outlet for your own ideas and thoughts. Check out Graff by Scape Martinez for ways to get your message on the wall.

    Latest from IMPACT’s 2009 Graffiti tour…

GRAFF author Scape Martinez sent me this picture of his visit to William C. Overfelt High School in San Jose.

Scape Martinez arrived at William C. Overfelt High School in San Jose only to discover several teachers already using his lesson plans for graffiti art.

And the word is that GRAFF lesson plans have already made it to classrooms there. (Personally, I feel absolutely gypped. There was NO graffiti in MY high school art class.)

Stay tuned for more free graffiti lesson plans and demonstrations like this one on Scape’s website! Click here to get the book and see what all the excitement’s about.

How to Draw Graffiti…at Barnes and Noble, at School, at the Library…

GRAFF: The Art & Technique of Graffiti is continuing to fly off the shelves and is keeping its creator,Scape Martinez, busy with workshops, signings and school assemblies in the San Jose area. What began as a classroom talk about mainly how to draw graffiti has turned into a full-blown assembly that covers not only how to create graffiti, but also the creative process in general and overcoming obstacles.

Click here for a free demonstration (set up as a lesson plan) posted by Scape on his blog, Open Source Artwork.

Scape Martinez leads school programs teaching how to create graffiti (legally), how to foster creativity and overcome obstacles. All tools that he learned to use in the creation of GRAFF.

    2009 Comic-Con Wrap-up

IMPACT had another great year at the San Diego Comic-Con last week. Many authors did book signings at our booth, and it was great to spend time with them: Scape Martinez (GRAFF); Chris Ryall and Scott Tipton (Comic Books 101); Randy Martinez (Creature Features); Harry Hamernik (Face Off and Cartoonimals); Brian and Kristy Miller (Hi-Fi Color for Comics); Peter David (Writing for Comics and Graphic Novels with Peter David, Revised); and Andy Schmidt (The Insider’s Guide to Creating Comics).

Many authors also had their own tables or booths, such as Stephanie Pui-Mun Law (Dreamscapes), and many participated in our IMPACT University panel on How to Write and Draw Comics and Graphic Novels along with Comics Buyer’s Guide editor Maggie Thompson.

As Editorial Director of IMPACT, for me, the con was filled with scouting authors, promoting IMPACT, noting trends and absorbing as much as I can about the entertainment and comics industries (despite its name, this convention is not just about comics—it’s popular entertainment of all sorts). There were lots of panels, including many how-to art sessions, and it was great to see what’s coming up from the plethora of creators and publishers represented in all of the popular styles IMPACT covers. Lots of new ideas and contacts I’m excited to follow up on—a great time!

Q+A with Scape Martinez, Graffiti Artist and Muralist

Lately, everybody’s talking about GRAFF: The Art & Technique of Graffiti, so I figured it was time to post the Q+A we did with Scape Martinez, the author of this completely cool, how to draw and paint graffiti guide.

Born in Newark, New Jersey and now living in San Jose, California, Scape creates with spray enamel, house paint, markers, acrylic and watercolor. He owns and operates two clothing lines, Liquidscape (www.liquidscape.com).He consistently teaches workshops and classes throughout the San Jose area, is featured in exhibitions, and works as an arts advocate for kids.

    Name: Edward Martinez

    Nickname: Scape One, Scape Weezy

    Favorite candy bar: None

Favorite TV show: Law and Order

    Favorite movie: Godfather

    Favorite website(s): www.wrestlingobserver.com

    Favorite blog(s): none

Do you collect anything (stamps, comics)? I collect records(vinyl) and movies (VHS).

First job ever: Gas station attendant

    Best job ever: Artist

When did you know you wanted to be an artist? When I discovered I already was one.

Give us a taste of your latest project? I finished a public art project for the city of San Jose. Two murals, one digital, the other hand-rendered. Both are 3 dimensional and abstract. Fun stuff!

Talk about a time you felt starstruck in your line of work. Never felt “starstruck.” Sorry.

What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve received? “Never give up” or “Don’t listen to the haters” or “Don’t try to be an artist unless you can work and live in isolation, without any thanks…” bleak, but needed until you get to the much lauded place.

Rufus B. Seder Creates Magical Moving Murals

Rufus B. Seder’s massive, moving wall art is true mural magic. Without the use of electricity or moving parts, Seder’s “Lifetiles” seem to move right before your eyes. Seder has created more than thirty Lifetiles installations around the world and has written two children’s books (“Gallop!” and “Swing!”), using similar technology (sort of similar to the way a flipbook works). Click here to learn more about Seder and the way his Lifetiles work.

Click here to hear Seder talk about his children’s books and to see the books and murals in action.

Seder’s mural techniques may be a little too complicated for most of us to pursue, but you can still create cool murals of your own. Graff: The Art & Technique of Graffiti by Scape Martinez will teach you everything you need to know to paint your own awesome (and legal!) graffiti. Click here to check it out for yourself.

Get painting and have a great weekend!
