Peter Capaldi Ends His Reign as the Doctor

Peter Capaldi has been the Twelfth Doctor on Doctor Who for a few seasons now. He took up the mantle after Matt Smith. His first full season as the Doctor was series 8. Peter has now announced that series 10 will be his last. He will do the 2017 Christmas special, but then he is moving on from the iconic role. Along with Peter Capaldi, Steven Moffat is also moving on. Chris Chibnall will be the new showrunner. Series 11 will be a clean slate with a new showrunner and a new Doctor. I do wonder if we’ll keep the new companion being introduced in series 10, Bill played by Pearl Mackie, or if they’ll only keep her for a season and have a totally fresh start all around. The first episode of series 10 will air on April 15th. I know I’m definitely counting down the days.

Peter talks about his experience on the show and why he’s leaving in an interview with Jo Whiley. You can listen to it here on the BBC site. Peter has said he’s very grateful for his time on the show:
“One of the greatest privileges of being Doctor Who is to see the world at its best. From our brilliant crew and creative team working for the best broadcaster on the planet, to the viewers and fans whose endless creativity, generosity and inclusiveness points to a brighter future ahead. I can’t thank everyone enough. It’s been cosmic.”

Capaldi himself has long been a huge fan of Doctor Who and it was a dream come true when he got the role. Regardless of how you feel about his turn as the Doctor, the man is immensely passionate about the show and so good to fans. Listen to Peter talk about growing up with Doctor Who while also showing off his artistic skills:

Now of course we wonder who is going to take up the mantle of the Doctor. There are a few names being tossed out already. Will the Doctor be young, old, male, female, finally a ginger? So many questions! Some sites have tossed out the option of the Doctor returning to an old face with David Tennant or Matt Smith returning to the role. While I adored both of them and would happily take more episodes, part of the charm of Doctor Who is the continued variety with new faces and new stories. It’s always tough to say goodbye to a Doctor, particularly when they’ve become your favorite, but it’s good to move on and embrace the change. Idris Elba is a name that has long been tossed out as an option and once again he’s being talked about. Others include Tilda Swinton, Damian Lewis, Danielle Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Ben Wishaw, Haley Atwell (my favorite choice if we’re jumping to a female Doctor), Richard Ayoade, etc. There are definitely a lot of options! I wonder if Chris will decide to really take a risk with someone totally new or if he’ll continue to play it safe with the role since it will be his first series as showrunner. Only time will tell. In the meantime, I’m definitely ready for a Twelfth Doctor marathon to get ready for the series 10 premiere!
