Manga Monday: Kingdom Hearts Art by Tetsuya Nomura

I’m definitely a fan of the Kingdom Hearts video game series. It’s an interesting combination of characters from Disney and Final Fantasy with the new characters created specifically for the game. Artist Tetsuya Nomura has worked on quite a few of the Final Fantasy games, but he’s also worked on Kingdom Hearts. Tetsuya worked as the director for the popular video game series and helped design the characters. I’ve really enjoyed playing through the Kingdom Hearts series. The gameplay was fun, the character design is interesting. I love the mix of new characters and characters from games and movies that I like. It’s a very different concept, and I’m glad it’s done so well over the years.

For the release of Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX in Japan, Square Enix released this mesmerizing video showing Tetsuya Nomura drawing the main protagonist, Sora. It’s fascinating to watch the time lapse video and see Tetsuya bring Sora to life.

Sora’s character design has a lot of little details. It’s amazing that Tetsuya Nomura can remember all of them and easily sketch the character out like this. The final lines are so clean, and Tetsuya seems so sure as he was sketching. Usually as I sketch I erase and re-do lines a ton!

Even if you haven’t played the Kingdom Hearts games, I think the art can definitely be appreciated. If you want to know some about the story but don’t have time to play the games, you can check out the Kingdom Hearts manga and you can watch all the cutscenes compiled into one video to get a feel for the game and the story.
