Ronja the Robber’s Daughter is a new animated series finally hitting the small screen. I remember hearing rumblings of this one before but finally I’ll have an easy way to watch it. The first season of the series hits Amazon Prime on Friday January 27. Ronja the Robber’s Daughter is animated by Polgyon Pictures and co-produced by Studio Ghibli. The visuals and a female lead very much fit into the Ghibli aesthetic. The cel-shading mixed with the three-dimensional animation creates a very interesting look. Though I personally feel that the hand drawn animation would have done this even more justice, it’s interesting to see the experimentation with the mixing of mediums. The series is based on the book written by Astrid Lindgren.
The daughter of a professional robber, Ronja realizes the complicated nature of her father’s profession when she befriends Birk, the child of a rival tribe. She struggles to balance this friendship with her family relationship but comes to understand, how differences can be overcome with the help of love and understanding.
I’m a sucker for all things even remotely connected to Studio Ghibli. And the trailer makes this look like a cute and fun little adventure. Though some of the CG looks a little shaky, hopefully it’s smoother when you see the show as a whole. If nothing else those backgrounds are beautiful. I’ll at least be giving this one a chance.
