IMPACT Book Editor Q&A: Beth Erikson

What is the best part about your job?
I love being a part of the process of bringing a book to life. I’ve always loved books, and I really like seeing all the different art styles and artists. It’s inspiring to see what they create and to learn about it as I work on the book.

Being a big word nerd, I enjoy the whole editing process itself, particularly the final edit review. It’s almost like a scavenger hunt because you look through the text and hunt down any stray mistakes or odd bits that need to be tweaked.

The Human Canvas
What is the most interesting/craziest experience you have had as an editor?
I got the chance to work on a beautiful coffee table book about bodypainting, The Human Canvas. I learned so much about the bodypainting craft! Did you know there’s an annual World Bodypainting Festival every year in Austria? The works these artists create are amazing. Truly masterpieces. I loved looking at all the images of the art when I had to narrow down the choices for the book.

Cartoon Animal Friends
What project are you working on right now?
I’m always working on multiple things at once. Right now I’m finishing up work on Cartoon Animal Friends by Char Reed. Her pet caricatures are just too cute for words. Speaking of cute, we’ve got a coloring book coming that’s filled with super cute animals and I already know I’ll definitely be printing up pages to color on the weekends.

Who is your favorite artist or what is your favorite type of art?
Do you cosplay: I do! I don’t get to cosplay as often as I would like but I’ve been to a lot of different conventions and cosplaying is always fun. Doing the research and figuring out how to make a costume can be a challenge, but it’s always worth it when you wear it at the convention and show your love for that character.

When I saw Guardians of the Galaxy I just couldn’t get over how snarky and wonderful Rocket Raccoon’s character was. So I had to make his costume for a con not that long after the movie.

One year I created a femme version of the 11th Doctor’s costume and wore it to meet Matt Smith and Karen Gillan. Matt said the costume was cool and that definitely made the hard work worth it!

Tell us something surprising about yourself?

What is your favorite type of book to read and/or the last book you read: I always love reading sci-fi and fantasy books but I’ve actually ventured out into more historical fiction and general fiction and now even a bit of mystery as well. If it has a good story and interesting characters then I don’t care what type of genre it is!

I’ll read anything by Sarah Douglass, Brandon Sanderson, Patrick Rothfuss and Mercedes Lackey to name a few though.

What are your favorite hobbies?
I like a lot of different things. Of course I love to read. I am a total media fan and have way too many TV shows and movies that I watch. I do enjoy sewing costumes and started trying a bit of embroidery earlier this year. One of these days I’d like to learn how to knit or crochet. I enjoy a good video game, and I absolutely love playing board games with friends. Bring on the strategy games! Oh, and let’s not forget that I love to travel!
