Square Enix and Marvel have announced a multiple year, multiple game partnership. Together the video game giant will work with Marvel to bring your favorite superhero characters to life. There aren’t many details yet but so far Square Enix and Marvel seem to be calling it The Avengers Project. It sounds like it could have an open world feel since the description in the trailer describes it as “a universe gamers can play in for years to come.”
Open world gaming seems to be growing even more popular than before. Technology and graphics have just continued to develop and allow more freedom in creating a vast world for players to explore. Horizon Zero Dawn and Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild are just two examples. World of Warcraft of course continues to dominate in pulling in players for exploring a vast digital world. Often there can be a main story to complete, but the freedom to roam and enjoy a fantastical world is very appealing. With The Avengers Project being a universe to explore “for years to come,” I wonder if players will be able to create their own heroes and then team up with NPC versions of Marvel characters like Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and Hulk. A character generator with superhero options could be fun to play with. You could create your own suit, emblem, weapon choice. I always spend hours just on the character generation whenever I start a new MMO or RPG.
Square Enix has definitely done well with interesting characters and vast worlds with the popular Final Fantasy franchise. The Kingdom Hearts series shows a good blend of new characters and well-known characters with the creation of the protagonist Sora running around with Goofy, Donald and meeting signature Disney characters. If Square Enix and Marvel modeled the game after that concept it could be interesting. Players could explore the different Marvel character universes or go on missions for SHIELD. Not much is known yet for the format. That short teaser, while beautiful, doesn’t give much to go on. We’ll definitely be keeping our eyes peeled as more info gets released though!
