How to Draw Video Game Villains: Minions and Boss Characters

What’s a game without a good villain? Video game villains give you the chance to stretch those creative muscles. Their design can be dependent on the level your hero meets them in. Often the main boss will have smaller minions you fight along the way. Minions are easy to draw! Learn how to draw these video game villains with today’s tutorial from the new IMPACT book, How to Draw Video Games by Steve Harpster.

Creating Minions With Basic Shapes

Start with the basics. The importance of starting a drawing with basic shapes cannot be overstated. In this exercise you’ll notice how these very simple shapes can easily be turned into complicated looking characters. These little minions are perfect creatures to run around your video game level, terrorizing your hero.

The rolling spike mine will chase down any hero that enters its domain. Watch out! If it rolls into you then it’s game over.

Generating Ideas for Video Game Villains

Here is one of the best tricks for creating characters. Start by drawing the silhouette or the shadow of the character first. Create interesting forms and shapes with a gray marker. You can also use digital tools like Photoshop to quickly paint interesting groups of shapes.

Once you have these forms created, try adding details. You can do this with a black pen on top of your marker sketches. In this example, I used a dark gray color to sketch in ideas on a new layer using Photoshop.

The Skeleton King and His Army

Your game might call for a variety of looks for some evil skeleton warriors. It is easy to create different armor and looks for the skeleton warriors by drawing over a basic body template, shown here.

Small changes to the skeleton’s armor make each warrior look completely different. As you create your warriors, think about how they came to be. Were they once proud knights cursed by a witch’s spell or are they searching the earth for a final resting place?

Keep using the same basic body template to sketch out ideas and designs. Give them different armor, weapons and accessories to show if they’re a lowly soldier or the king.

Now that you’ve created some video game villains, you’ll need your hero! Check out the tutorial about drawing Minecraft style characters.
